Africans are found in Yarmouth, according to known written word, around the 1750s. They immigrated primarily as persons enslaved to New England Planters. In 1761, when Yarmouth was officially established, Blacks were present. When White's rioted against gainfully employed Blacks in 1784, in one of this nation's earliest race riots, fleeing Africans made their way from the Shelburne/Birchtown area to Yarmouth. At the corner of East and Albert streets find an original African Methodist Episcopalian Church (AMEC) Building. Originally established as the Disney AME Church it is now the Pentecostal Sharon Assembly Church.
